Gamified screen time apps for iPhone

Forest is the classic: a tree grows while you stay off your phone and withers if you leave. Opal and BePresent add scores, streaks and leaderboards. Unrot makes you earn app time with real tasks, and Bloom grows flowers when you keep your limits. Champ rewards the pause itself: each 30-second reset opens a flower.

The apps, side by side

We read each app’s App Store listing and, where it has one, its own site on Oct 20, 2026. We haven’t used every app for weeks, so each note says what the vendor documents and what we couldn’t confirm. Champ makes this site, and its row was last checked against the app on Oct 13, 2026, so read it the way you’d read any vendor describing itself. There are no prices, plans or ratings here, Champ’s included.

Notes on each app

Forest

Forest rewards time away from your phone. You start a focus session, a tree grows while you stay out, and it withers if you leave early. Focus milestones unlock new tree species and soundscapes, and you can plant together with friends in a shared session. Its site says Forest plants real trees through Trees for the Future and covers the cost itself. The tree only grows in a session you chose to start, so it does nothing for the opens you didn’t plan.

Opal

Opal’s game is a score. A Focus Score splits your day into focused and distracted time, milestones (gems you crack open, in its latest update) mark progress, and a leaderboard lets you challenge friends. The blocking underneath is serious: schedules, daily limits, open limits, and a Deep Focus mode its listing says you can’t cancel or bypass. If points and rankings keep you going, Opal gives you plenty of both.

BePresent

BePresent mixes app-blocking sessions with competition: weekly leaderboards, tiers, group sessions with friends, and streaks for staying under your limits. You can also put money on a daily goal and lose it if you go over. Points earned off your phone can be redeemed for rewards from partner brands. We couldn’t confirm what its stricter Beast Mode locks.

Unrot

Unrot flips the deal: apps stay locked until you spend coins, and you earn coins by doing something real first. A habit is logged with a timer or a photo, like a walk or a clean room. A small character in the app grows when you do things and loses energy when you scroll too much. Its listing doesn’t mention a way past the lock without coins, so we couldn’t confirm whether there’s an emergency option.

Bloom (Rodger Studio)

This is the Bloom by Rodger Studio. You set a schedule, a daily time limit or a cap on opens, and every day you keep your rules earns a watering can for your garden. Flowers grow when you look after them and wilt when you don’t, and keeping it up for weeks unlocks new plants. Its listing doesn’t say whether a block can be skipped.

Champ

Champ rewards the moment you stop, not the hours you stay away. Open an app you guard and the shield offers a 30-second reset. Every reset you finish opens a flower in your garden, and a day with two resets opens a sunflower. Finish all of a day’s self-care cards and the tree grows a stage, across a 21-day challenge. Nothing ever withers.

Breakr

Breakr gamifies time away: a battery charges while you stay off distracting apps, and you earn Power Points, momentum and streaks. A bot looks happy when you focus and sad when you scroll. Its listing says it uses allow lists and soft limits instead of harsh blocking. The newest App Store update we saw is from Nov 27, 2025, so check it’s still maintained before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gamified screen time app?

One that turns using your phone less into a game: points, streaks, levels, a leaderboard, or something that grows. The apps here differ in what earns the reward: time away from your phone (Forest, Breakr), keeping your limits (Bloom, BePresent), real-world tasks (Unrot), a score (Opal), or finishing a 30-second reset (Champ).

Which gamified app works without starting a timer?

Champ, Bloom, Unrot and Opal work on their own once they’re set up: a shield when you open an app, or a rule that runs on a schedule or a limit. Forest’s tree grows only in a session you start, though its Time Guard can block apps on a schedule.

Do any of these punish you when you slip?

Forest’s tree withers if you leave a session early, Bloom’s flowers wilt when you break your rules, and BePresent can take your money stake if you go over your goal. Champ’s garden never takes back a flower you earned.

Which gamified screen time app can I use with friends?

Forest has shared sessions where friends plant together, BePresent has group sessions and weekly leaderboards, and Opal has a leaderboard you can challenge friends on. Champ’s Friends leaderboard ranks self-care practice, not time away, and it has no live shared sessions.

Does Champ grow a tree when I stay off my phone?

No. Champ’s garden grows from what you do: each finished reset opens a flower, and daily self-care cards grow the tree. A Focus round keeps apps closed but doesn’t grow the garden. If you want a reward for time away, Forest or Breakr fit that better.

Who should skip Champ

Skip Champ if what keeps you going is a reward for time away from your phone. Forest grows a tree for every session you stay out, and Champ’s garden doesn’t grow from time away at all. Skip it too if you want rankings for time away from your phone: Opal and BePresent have those, and Champ’s Friends leaderboard ranks self-care practice instead.
