Champ vs one sec

one sec and Champ share the same core insight: a short forced pause before an app opens breaks the reflex. one sec keeps that pause minimal and focused. Champ makes the pause a 30-second reset you can choose the shape of, and attaches a reward system so the habit survives past week three.

How one sec works

one sec pioneered the interception pause on iOS: you try to open an app, one sec intervenes with a short breathing animation, and then asks whether you still want to continue. It is deliberately spare — the intervention is the whole product, and it is very well judged.

Its minimalism is a real strength. There is almost nothing to configure and almost nothing to get bored of.

How Champ works

Champ starts in the same place and goes further in two directions. First, the pause is a choice of four practices — breathing, affirmation, short meditation, or a visualisation of your own vision board — so it stays interesting across hundreds of repetitions.

Second, completing a reset does something: it waters a tree. Twenty-one consistent days grows it into a permanent part of your garden. The reason is unglamorous — pure friction stops working once it becomes familiar, and something has to carry the habit after novelty wears off.

Champ also has the rest of the app behind it: a meditation library, breathing techniques, affirmations, a vision board. Whether that is an advantage or a distraction depends entirely on what you want.

Choose one sec if…

Choose one sec if you want exactly one thing done well and nothing else. It is the cleaner, more focused product, and if a garden and Guardians sound like clutter to you, that instinct is correct and you should follow it.

Choose Champ if…

Choose Champ if you have tried a bare pause and watched yourself start tapping through it on autopilot, and you want the gap to be filled with something worth doing.

Champ's free tier is enough to find out which camp you're in.

Questions

Is Champ just one sec with a game attached?

The interception mechanic is similar — both use Apple’s Screen Time framework, and one sec got there first. The difference is what fills the pause and what happens afterwards.

Does the gamification get annoying?

It can, if you do not want it. The garden is visible but the core loop — shield, reset, continue or not — works whether or not you engage with Guardians and coins.
