Apps that grow a garden when you use your phone less

Forest is the original: a tree grows during a focus session and withers if you leave. Flora works the same way, with friends. Bloom, Overgrow and Phoneless Garden grow plants when you keep your daily limits. Champ is the odd one out: its garden grows from 30-second resets and daily self-care, not from time away.

The apps, side by side

We read each app’s App Store listing and, where it has one, its own site on Oct 20, 2026. We haven’t used every app for weeks, so each note says what the vendor documents and what we couldn’t confirm. Champ makes this site, and its row was last checked against the app on Oct 13, 2026, so read it the way you’d read any vendor describing itself. There are no prices, plans or ratings here, Champ’s included.

Notes on each app

Forest

Forest started this idea: plant a tree, stay off your phone while it grows, and it withers if you leave early. Over time your sessions build a forest you can look back on by week, month or year. Deep Focus blocks apps outside your allow list during a session, and Time Guard blocks apps on a schedule. Its site says Forest plants real trees through Trees for the Future and covers the cost itself.

Champ vs Forest, compared at length

Sources

Flora

Flora works like Forest: plant a seed, focus, and it grows into a tree, but leave the app and the tree is killed. Planting with friends is its twist: if everyone stays off their phones, each of you wins an extra tree. Trees grown regularly add up to a garden, and you can tag a tree with an item on its to-do list. Its listing describes opt-in real-tree planting with partner organizations.

Bloom (Rodger Studio)

Bloom (by Rodger Studio) is a blocker that keeps a garden. You set a schedule, a daily time limit or a cap on opens, and each day you keep your rules earns a watering can for your flowers. Keep it up and new plants unlock, such as sunflowers, tulips and lavender. Skip the care and the flowers wilt. Its listing doesn’t say whether a block can be skipped.

Overgrow

Overgrow’s garden grows as your screen time falls and wilts gently on heavy days, though it never dies. Opening a blocked app shows a calm shield where you can spend one of a few daily unlocks. Its commitment rule is the interesting part: tightening a limit applies right away, but loosening one waits until the next day. It’s version 1.0, released in June 2026, so it’s young.

Phoneless Garden

Phoneless Garden never blocks. A pause of 5 to 90 seconds shows today’s time on the apps you picked, then you close the app or choose how long to stay. Its plant, Leafy, grows on days you stay within your goal and rests when you go over. It never wilts. Of these apps, it’s the closest to Champ’s no-shame approach, without any blocking at all.

Focus Plant

Focus Plant is a focus timer with a game around it. Put the phone down to collect raindrops, then spend them to grow and collect plants and to clean up its small worlds. It can also read mindful minutes that other focus apps log in Apple Health. Its listing doesn’t explain how it blocks apps, despite “app blocker” in its name, so we couldn’t confirm that part.

Champ

Champ’s garden doesn’t grow from time away from your phone, so it’s not quite what this page’s title asks for. It grows from what you do when you reach for an app: open one you guard and the shield offers a 30-second reset. Every reset you finish opens a flower in your garden, and a day with two resets opens a sunflower. Finish all of a day’s self-care cards and the tree grows a stage, across a 21-day challenge. Nothing ever withers.

Frequently asked questions

Which app grows a tree when you stay off your phone?

Forest, and Flora works the same way. Both grow a tree during a focus session you start, and both lose it if you leave early. Overgrow and Bloom grow a garden from keeping your daily limits instead of from a timed session.

Do any of these gardens die if I slip?

Forest’s tree withers and Flora’s dies if you leave a session early. Bloom’s flowers wilt when you skip your rules, and Overgrow’s garden wilts on heavy days but never dies. Phoneless Garden’s plant rests instead, and Champ’s garden never takes back a flower.

Which garden app doesn’t block apps?

Phoneless Garden. It shows a pause and your time today, and leaves the choice to you. The others can block in some form: Bloom and Overgrow with limits, Forest with Deep Focus and Time Guard, Champ with its shield and Rules.

Does Champ grow a garden when I use my phone less?

Not directly. Champ’s garden grows from finished resets and daily self-care cards, not from time away. A Focus round keeps apps closed but doesn’t grow the garden. If you want a reward for time away, Forest, Flora or Overgrow fit that better.

Do these apps plant real trees?

Forest’s site says it plants real trees through Trees for the Future and covers the cost. Flora’s listing describes opt-in real-tree planting with partner organizations. Champ’s garden lives only in the app.

Who should skip Champ

Skip Champ if you want your garden to grow from time away from your phone. That’s the whole idea behind Forest, Flora and Overgrow, and Champ doesn’t do it. Skip it as well if you never want an app blocked: Phoneless Garden only ever pauses.
