If you are looking for attention span statistics, the useful answer is that there is no single number that describes how long a person can focus. Attention depends on the task, the setting, what is competing for notice, and what you mean by focus in the first place.
Viral claims about attention often circulate without a dependable study behind them. They travel well because they are simple, alarming and memorable; that is not the same thing as being well sourced.

Is there an average attention span?
No: “attention span” is a loose label for several different abilities, not one personal timer. A review of sustained-attention research describes sustained attention as maintaining readiness for relevant signals over a prolonged period, which is already much narrower than the everyday question, “How long can I concentrate?” Read the review.
Someone proofreading a contract, listening to a friend, driving in rain, playing a game and reading an article are doing different things. The demands, stakes, novelty and distractions differ too. Reducing all of that to one universal duration makes a good headline, but a poor description of ordinary life.
Even the Microsoft Canada report that helped popularise a widely shared attention claim made this point elsewhere in its own pages. It separated sustained attention, selective attention and alternating attention, and said attention could not simply be characterised by how long people concentrate. That does not mean your own experience of distraction is imaginary. You may genuinely notice that you open an app without quite deciding to, or that a notification breaks the thread of a task. It means the honest question is more specific: Which activity is being interrupted, by what, and what would I rather be doing?
Where did the familiar viral attention claim come from?
It came into wide circulation through a marketing report, which attributed the figures to a statistics website rather than to a named research paper. On the relevant page, the Microsoft Canada report labels the source as Statistic Brain; it does not give readers a peer-reviewed study measuring the claimed average. That source trail matters. A report may include surveys, tests or useful observations and still not establish every striking claim printed inside it. The most repeatable claim often gets detached from its caveats, its methodology and, eventually, any clear route back to evidence.
There is a second problem with this kind of claim: it asks one small, catchy number to represent every person in every situation. It does not tell you whether the supposed measure concerns looking time, task persistence, memory, response accuracy or something else. Without that definition, there is no meaningful comparison to make.
The lesson is not that marketing reports are automatically worthless. It is that their purpose, audience and methods should be visible. In this case, the report was produced in an advertising context and explicitly discusses how brands can capture attention. That context should change how confidently we repeat its broadest claims. Does research give us a fixed time to refocus after an interruption?
No single fixed recovery time applies to everyone or every interruption, and the popular wording does not match a source that measures refocusing in that universal way. It is better to avoid repeating it as an attention-span statistic.
There is real research on interrupted work, but it is more interesting and more limited than the viral version. In one experiment involving interrupted office-style email tasks, Gloria Mark, Daniela Gudith and Ulrich Klocke found that participants completed interrupted tasks faster, with no difference in quality, while reporting greater pressure, frustration and effort. That is not a universal stopwatch for getting your mind back. It concerns a particular experimental task and a particular kind of interruption. It also points to a useful nuance: people may compensate after being interrupted, rather than simply returning to work in a predictable, identical way.
For day-to-day phone habits, that nuance is practical. A message from your child, a calendar reminder and an autoplaying feed do not interrupt you in the same way. Nor does writing an email resemble learning a new skill, reading fiction or doing a job that requires careful judgement. A tidy statistic can hide the exact detail that would help you change something.
How can I check wellness statistics before I share them?
Start by asking whether the claim has an original source you can actually open. If an article gives a precise number but does not name and link the study, report or official dataset, treat it as a prompt to investigate rather than a fact to pass on.
Use this short checklist:
- Find the earliest source. Look beyond summaries, posts and infographics. A link to another article is not the same as a link to the underlying work.
- Check what was measured. Was it self-reported behaviour, a lab task, device logs, a survey response or an observation? The method shapes what the result means.
- Check who took part. A result from a defined group can be useful without representing everybody.
- Read the conclusion, not only the headline. Notice whether the authors describe an association, a comparison or a specific task outcome. Do not quietly turn that into a universal cause-and-effect claim.
- Keep the caveat when you share it. If the caveat makes the claim less dramatic, it was probably important.
We should apply this standard to screen-time products too. A feature can make a choice more noticeable without guaranteeing what any individual will do with that moment. Clearer claims are not less useful; they are more respectful of the person using the tool.
What can I do today without an app?
Put your phone out of reach for one clearly defined activity, and decide in advance when you will look at it next. This is deliberately ordinary, because the point is to remove one cue rather than stage a perfect digital detox.
Here is the full version. Choose one task you already intend to do today: a meal, a walk, a chapter of a book, a piece of work or a conversation. Before starting, place your phone in another room, bag or drawer. Say or write: “I will check it when I finish this task.” Then begin the task without trying to measure your focus or judge yourself for every wandering thought.
When you return to the phone, notice only one thing: did putting distance between you and the device make the choice to check it more deliberate? If it did not, adjust the task, location or timing next time. You are testing your own routine, not trying to live up to a statistic.

It depends on whether you need a firm boundary, a moment to choose, or neither. A dedicated blocker may suit you if the issue is the automatic opening of one or two apps, especially when a brief pause is enough to bring your intention back into view. But no app is required if moving the phone, changing notification settings or choosing a phone-free activity solves the actual problem.
